Desire - If I Cant Hold You Tonight
Desire is the new project of Johnny Jewel (Chromatics and Glass Candy) and singstress Megan Louise.
Single version of one of the stand out tracks from Desire's II LP. "If I Can't Hold You" is a pretty sparsely arranged lament about unrequited love that also interpolates some of the lyrics from Dan Hartman's 80s classic "I Can Dream About You." This single version also includes a radio edit, instrumental as well as a more densely arranged demo version of the track. The Italians Do It Better yet again, featuring Johnny Jewel on a seductive night-cruise with vocalist Megan Louise in their Desire vehicle. In its sublime original form 'If I Can't Hold You Tonight' stealthily paces the edge of the floor, Jewel's panther-like production containing the barest hint of twinkling city-lights synth keys and insistent kickdrum to set the scene for an ice-cool vocal dripping with nostalgic nocturnal glamour and minor-key synth-pop elan. An arresting vocal version follows, giving a gasp-inducing performance limited to the two-line refrain underpinned by a naked kickdrum with teasing ultra-minimalist keys leading to the full melody before it all dissipates, vanished into a 'Cocktail' alike night-scene. On the flip we get a purely instrumental mix and the alternate demo version, inspired by Dan Hartman's 'I Can Dream About You' which is less wistful than the main mix but still loaded with sleek dancefloor potential. Sublime.
