Vans Skateboard Shoes TNT III - Vans X Independent Truck Co.: Independent Truck Company is one of the most recognizable brands in skateboarding. Its rich history spans over 30 years of skateboarding’s hottest pros, most controversial advertisements, a powerful icon, a significant name, and the most renowned truck design–all of which set the standard for others to mimic.

Independent arrived on the scene in the late ’70s–a time when skateboarding was experiencing declining sales and was at a crossroads between mainstream overexposure and the soon- to-emerge underground scene. Punk rock was just taking hold in the states and its attitude and rawness wasn’t merely coincidental with skateboarders at the time, who were tired of the typical sport confines, running cones in sport gear with trucks that either didn’t hold up or didn’t turn. Skateboarders no longer related to the current brands that had no image or depth and were named after old surfers. The industry needed innovation and attitude to match what skaters possessed themselves.

The founders of Indy took that raw attitude of the skaters and the emerging scene and ran with it. At the time skateboarding was clean; it was on TV and at the toy store. As Bob Denike said in the book Built to Grind, “Independent slapped the sport in a better direction; it freed us from structure and team jerseys. Skateboarding was a virgin before that. It went in drinking soda and left the place with booze.”

The movement of this generation was enduring, and to this day, few companies have survived the ups and downs of the business to give skateboarders the same standards that applied when skateboarding was small–innovation and attitude. Independent and Vans are two of these companies that continue to light the fire. So when a collaboration project between Indy and Vans came up as Indy’s 30th anniversary was approaching, it was an easy decision. As Indy Team Manager Lance Dawes said about the project, “It just makes sense, you know, the two most hardcore brands in the world–the most tried and true shoe company and the best truck company ever. Then you’ve got Dustin Dollin, Van Engelen, Rowley, and Trujillo–doesn’t get much tougher than that.”
Created as an upgrade to the Old Skool, this shoe has the fit, support, and performance that you would expect in the modern cupsole version of the Vans “waffle” sole.
